Humble Beginnings
The story of Pickin’ Porch Grill is one of passion, creativity, and determination. Mike Clemmer, the founder, was once stuck in a corporate job in Knoxville that wasn’t fulfilling. Realizing his true calling, Mike decided to leave his corporate life behind and follow his dream. With a background as a musician and dulcimer maker, Mike spent his final months in his corporate job building dulcimers during his vacation. This would ultimately lead to the founding of Pickin’ Porch Grill.
The Clemmers’ journey took a turning point when they took over the lease of Wood-N-Things in the Nawger Nob Craft Settlement. They transformed the space into Wood-N-Strings, which opened in 1996. The Pickin’ Porch grew from there, with the Clemmers adding a porch and stage to host weekly performances. This successful combination of great food and entertainment quickly gained a loyal following, and the Pickin’ Porch Grill is now a beloved spot for both locals and visitors.
